SPRING MILL FIRE COMPANY NO. 1 NEWSLETTER 2007 FALL EDITION FROM THE PRESIDENT I hope this newsletter finds everyone in good health and helps to keep you informed of all of the happenings at Spring Mill Fire Company No 1. We will be sending this out twice a year to all active and life members. As always, there are many happenings at the Fire Company and the best way to stay informed is to come to the monthly meetings. In September we will be again having “Old Timer’s Night” and attendance in past years by our “elder” members has been declining. It is to a point that I am now looked upon as an old timer, which is scary. If transportation is an issue, call me and we will try to arrange a ride for you. This fire company is only as strong as its members and every member has a stake in the organization. If you have issues or questions, please call me at the firehouse, drop a note or e-mail me president@springmillfire.com. I would also like to bring the fire company into the 90’s and start to set up an e-mail distribution list rather than the costly and slow mail service that we are using. It is also important for us to maintain accurate addressed for members so that we can ensure that required mailings are received timely. If you have any information that you would like to share with the members of Spring Mill, send them to Secretary Terri Brash either by email at Ter920@yahoo.com or mail them to the firehouse to her attention. FIREHOUSE RENOVATIONS The upgrades to the social room are complete. The tiles, lighting, grid work, and exhaust system have made a big difference to this area. We also rent the social room for parties up to 70 people so please consider this for your next affair. Rules and regulations are included in this newsletter. The Banquet hall renovations are underway – Many thanks to Hall Renovations Committee for all of their work on this project. The renovations are scheduled to be completed by September 1, 2007. UPCOMING EVENTS September 11, 2007 – Old Timer’s Night/Company Meeting The meeting will be held in the banquet hall so that you can see the changes that were made. December 2007 – Fire Company Holiday Party - Date To be determined SICK AND BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE As always, any member who is aware of a sickness or death should drop a note as soon as possible to allow us to take the applicable action. With many of the "seasoned" members not in the area, it is difficult many times to keep abreast of their status. WEB SITE The Fire Company maintains a web site at springmillfire.com. We are looking for a webmaster to assist in keeping the site up to date and also to manage it on a regular basis. (Update pictures, dates) If anyone is interested or knows of someone who has the time to do this, please contact President Paul Stanish. Relief Insurance Benefit Update – the forms have been distributed to all members. These forms need to be filled out and sent back in order for your insurance benefits to go into effect. If you are a new member, the insurance will take effect upon completion of your probationary period. Address Changes – Please be sure to notify Dennis Jordan or Secretary Terri Brash of any address changes so that you will receive all mailings that are sent. TROPHY CASE Several years ago the family of one of our elder members made a donation to the Fire Company for the building of a trophy case. With the changes that have been made to the entrance to the Social Room this is now a reality. We have dusted of our memorabilia and trophies and have displayed that in the Social Room entrance. Check your attics! Any member who has anything to add to the case please give us a call. We will put your name on it to ensure that it is returned to you when requested. MEMBER’S RENTALS OF HALL AND SOCIAL ROOM As I stated earlier, I encourage you to consider the Fire Company hall and social room for your next rental. There has always been confusion on the costs and requirements for each so I am listing the rules that were adopted by the Board of Directors: For rentals of the HALL, the following procedures apply: 1. The member will contact Jim Collins (215-460-2309) to check on availability. The member will notify Jim that they are a member and the contract MUST be in the member’s name. 2. If date is available, Jim will meet the member to sign a contract. The member will also be responsible to provide a deposit check when the contract is signed. The contract will reflect the room, bar and staffing costs. 3. The member will then take the signed contract to the President to adjust the contract for member pricing when applicable. 4. The active member cost for the room will be 50% of the stated rate. All other fees, bar and staff, are not discounted. 5. All rules and regulations in place are applicable to members. For rentals of the SOCIAL ROOM, the following procedures apply: 1) All calls for social room rentals will be directed to the President 2) Use of room limited to (1) time per calendar year. 3) A second use by active member will be billed at $50 off normal fee. 4) Active membership is defined by by-laws and governed by the provisions of ability to vote at previous annual meeting. 5) Auxiliary members are considered "active” as per their by-laws. 6) All affairs limited to (4) hours (1 hour allowed prior to time for set up—30 minutes for clean up) 7) Excess hours billed at $25.00 per hour 8) Set up, including tables and chairs, and clean up are the responsibility of the member. THE LAST WORD In closing, I am always impressed how this Fire Company always comes together when the “bell rings” or in times of need. Recent news reports on the injuries to the volunteers from Delaware County are a prime example of how supportive we need to be as firefighters and members. All volunteer organizations are made up of many unique personalities and melding them together into a cohesive unit is always a challenge. I would hope that the personal agendas of the Board of Directors and Officers are always checked at the door and statements and decisions that are being made are done so with the betterment of the organization in mind. I would ask that all members do the same and recognize that although everyone has a right to speak their mind, there is a proper place and time and before we put our mouth in gear, lets think how are words will affect those involved.
Paul Stanish, President
